Erwin Lazaro cglazaro100 Little River Band - Reminiscing (G. Goble) ~ Erwin Lazaro 138
I want to thank everyone who continues to view and comment on my videos. That includes family and friends who approve and remark on my wife’s Facebook account where I post my videos every Monday afternoon (PST/GMT-7). Yes, family and friends have asked me to begin my own Facebook Timeline, but I can’t even manage my YouTube account very well let alone open an account on a social website. Thus, I post my videos on my wife’s FB account and refer to myself in third person. LOLOL! I may change my mind later on and become more social. We shall see. Anyway, I do pay attention and read everything posted. The kind and not-so-kind (LOL) commentary encourages me to move forward and share my love for great music. I do prefer the kind comments, but just as long as the not-so-kind comments are respectful, those are appreciated as well. I also appreciate all who continue to read my blogs for the description box below each of my videos. Over the last few months, for the most part, I’ve kept my musings lighthearted. I do have so much more to write about, but since I started the process of vocal recordings with my Tascam, followed by sound engineering the music using audio software, and finally using video software to sync my audio production with video footage, I’ve been less inspired to write. I’ve been concentrating on fine tuning some skills using the audio software. Again, my learning curve for singing has reached a new level of appreciation. I’m forced to pay attention to even more details about my performances and I believe that I’ve continued to become a better singer because of my efforts. I hope that those of you who have continuously enjoyed my videos have noticed my singing skills improve over time. I believe that as my singing skills improve I’m able to cover songs that have previously intimidated me. Like last week, when I covered “Faithfully” by Journey and improved my skills enough to pull it off with a decent degree of success, I’m covering another song this week that I had placed on the back burners because I had felt my previous efforts have been subpar.
I love love love the music of Little River Band. From “Help Is On Its Way” to “Happy Anniversary” to “Lady” to “Lonesome loser” to “Cool Change” (my 32nd post) to “The Night Owls” (my 131stvideo) to “Take It Easy On Me” to “The Other Guy” and more, I would love to cover all of these hits. But, for me, the one that tops the LRB list is “Reminiscing”. In fact, I have a funny short story about“Reminiscing”. I thought I could cover“Reminiscing” like nobody’s business. My wife wanted to be on The Oprah Show before Oprah retired the program. One opportunity came when the show was looking for singers. I was cocky and videotaped an a cappella version of “Reminiscing”. I thought I would get a call back at the very least, but nothing happened. I was upset and obviously overconfident. I found that particular video a while ago and reviewed my performance. Guess what? I really sucked! At the time, I was satisfied with my recording and shared it with Oprah’s staff. But, upon review, my jaw dropped and I couldn’t even listen to my entire performance. It was so bad. It’s humbling; so humbling that I stopped singing “Reminiscing” because I was embarrassed at myself. My poor wife, I felt like I also let her down. She’d say otherwise, of course.
For my 131st video I covered “The Night Owls”. OneLaBonBon and 0a9ziza, two of my YouTube friends both commented on my 131st video and requested me to cover “Reminiscing”. Because of the dual request I was inspired to re-learn a song that I thought I knew inside and out. It goes to show that overconfidence is a huge deterrent for success. This time around I studied “Reminiscing” like I was enjoying the music for the first time. My 138th video is the result of what I’ve learned for this performance. I just hope that when I review this specific cover of “Reminiscing” down the road, I’ll feel the same way that I feel at this time. I do feel like this performance is ready for sharing on YouTube. Please share your opinions about my performance. I’ve already beat myself up enough. I’ll take the hugs along with the jabs! XD
"Reminiscing" is a 1978 song written by Graeham Goble, and performed by Australian rock music group Little River Band. It remains their greatest success in the United States, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #10 on the Easy Listening chart. In 1993 "Reminiscing" was given a BMI Million-Air award for one million plays on US radio. By 2001 that award had expanded to the extraordinarily rare Four Million-Air award, acknowledging four million plays on American radio – the highest achievement ever for any Australian popular song. The original Little River Band song was used for the 2010 film The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.
