In October, where I live, the weather becomes considerably milder, but typically pleasant. Leaves turn into a beautiful array of fall colors that bring a sense of comfort for me. I enjoy the hues that often swirl with the wind, fall through the air, and gently spot the grounds, continuing the cycle of life. On occasion, the rain becomes fierce and the wind enforces a vendetta. What turning leaves were left on the trees become wet piles of browns, oranges, reds, and yellows, painting the lawns and streets and everything in between. All but the evergreens become bare until springtime renews the foliage once again.
I’m not sure if many people feel the same way, but I enjoy listening to the rain fall and the wind rustling the leaves. I’ll quietly sit within the late evening stillness of my home and close my eyes. As dark as it is outside, as dark as it is with the lights off, as dark as it is with my eyes shut, I’ll breathe deeply and absorb the vibrant and vivid imagery presented by the sounds of nature’s dance just outside my window. My heart races from the sense of comfort that flows through me and I can’t help but hold my breath for a few seconds before I exhale and move on with my life. For those brief moments it feels like I’ve renewed myself with the energy being released so naturally outside the protection of my home. As fall continues, the night air becomes so cool and knowing that my wife has already put out the flannels for our bed, the anticipation of slipping in and nestling deep within the covers exhilarates my senses further. During these cool falls and colder winters, I get similar feelings when I’m about to enjoy a delicious bowl of hot soup or a good cup of fragrantly hot tea. A simple cup of hot water also gets me going. This is because of the fondness lovingly etched within my memories about the cup of hot water that my wife and I ordered, at the same time, on our first date. She copied me, by the way. =) And, just like comfort food, comfort music exhilarates me in the same way. From the first note, some songs warm my heart and soul and re-energize my entire being. Some of my comfort music is untouchable though, meaning I can’t sing a lick of it, so I quietly listen and enjoy. A perfect example is Bee Gees “Too Much Heaven” or Earth Wind & Fire’s “That’s the Way of the World”. I just can’t … go there …sigh. Parts of my body hurt from the strain of trying to hit notes that are simply out of my range. But, thankfully, I do have comfort music I can sing. Poco’s “Heart of the Night” is one of those songs. From Wikipedia: “Heart of the Night” and “Crazy Love” became the two biggest hits to date for the country rock band Poco. Both songs were recorded for their 13thalbum Legend which was released in 1978. The cover art for the Legend album was done by then-unknown graphic artist Phil Hartman, who would go on to considerable success as a comedian, on Saturday Night Live, NewsRadio, and The Simpsons, among others.
