A complete stranger discovered me through YouTube and asked me to help her make peace with her sorrowful heart. I was stunned by what I was reading. Cat and I were so moved. I immediately acted on Kat's requests. That weekend, I put on my black suit and tie, set up my family room, and sang "Wind Beneath My Wings" for the very first time. Of course, I've enjoyed Bette Midler's music on the radio many times. But, this was the first time that I had ever sung one of her famous songs. I'm honored to present to all of you, this special request, that includes the last words exchanged between dear friends. What you are about to read comes directly from Steven's last letter to his dear friend, Kat.
"This will most likely be the last time i'll have enough energy to write. you and tell you how much you have ment to me, ever since that first day on the swing set when i threw sand at you, and you threw a rock and hit me in the head, and sent me off crying to the teacher, you started crying, ran to the nurses office telling me you were sorry you didn't mean to.. I knew you didn't mean to. i think I was in love with you then.
I've always loved you Kitten, I should have married you, , when you sed yes the first time. but i knew I could not give you, your fairy tale not yet. Little did I know you would make a believer of fairytales ,dreams of castles and princesses, locked towers, and white knights, out of me but that little girl inside you, did just that. you are the wind beneath wings, you gave me the strength to fight that dragon and beat him for a time, not once baby but 3 times he returned, stronger and more aggressive then ever. If you ever doubt yourself again honey look inside and remember, that little girl inside. You are the beautiful,, confident woman you are today because of her. Keep your dreams alive, its ok to want the fairytale baby, Another prince is out there. I know he will fall in Love with you. don't see how he could help it. Don't put the Guard gate up let him find you. he will, i'm sure of it, be happy love, you deserve all the happiness the world has to offer. Thank you for being there with me to fight ogers and dragons and allowing me to rescue a beautiful princess. from an evil swordsmen. I now can fly higher than eagle and you were the wind beneath my wings, i'll be in the arms of the angels, and Id' give up forever to stay right here with you.. if you hear a bell you know that an angel has got his wings. I'm taking all the love my soul can hold for you with me, This is not goodbye, only see you later.. I love you Kitten, remember to love yourself always. and Keep God in your heart always, see you later. Princess, Love Steven"
There is speculation that "Wind Beneath My Wings" may have actually originated in 1972, by a gospel group called the Mighty Clouds of Joy, on their self-titled album. Evidence of this is needed. However, they did record the song in 1992, on their album Catching On. "Wind Beneath My Wings" was later recorded by Sheena Easton in 1982, for her Madness, Money, & Music album. It was not released as a single by her record company. Although, she performed it on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, her HBO live concert special, as well as her NBC television special. It was later made into the title of a country (later pop) song, re-written by Larry Henley and Jeff Silbar. The second recording was in 1982 by Roger Whittaker. It was then covered by Colleen Hewett in early 1983. Gladys Knight also recorded another cover later that same year. In fact, Knight's edition was a Top Ten country hit, and it won the Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association Song of the Year awards that year. In 1987 it was recorded by Perry Como, and two years later by Bette Midler. Bette Midler's rendition was a Number One Billboard Hot 100 hit. "Wind Beneath My Wings" was also recorded by Bette Midler for the soundtrack of the film Beaches. It was named Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 1990 Grammy Awards. "Wind Beneath My Wings" was also recorded by Country Artist Gary Morris and reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
