Ahhhhhhh … Kenny Roger's music. Like my 93rd post last week, this is one of those songs that I sang over and over again within the privacy of my own bedroom when I was a teenager. When I endured those times of loneliness, thinking about what it would be like to actually be in a relationship, I sang and sang in order to quell the emotions, or more like distract myself, from the feelings that bombarded my senses with so many questions. In many ways, those emotions helped develop my ability to interpret the ballads of my youth. Of course, imagination was my tool. I sure did fumble with my imagination too! LOL! That’s why I have such an intimate fondness for the music of the 70s and early 80s. Many people relate music to personal experiences and I’m no different. I can easily choose music that brings back so many fond memories for me. But, songs like “She Believes In Me” doesn’t bring back any specific memories. Instead, it’s the emotional attachment that comes to light and gently reminds me of my growing pains and the appreciation I have for the music that helped me cope with difficult times. Even now, when I sing a song like this beautiful ballad, the feelings come back, though not to haunt me. Thankfully, I’m Incredibly Blessed by the love of my wife. Instead, feelings of appreciation remind me that my love for my wife requires my attention and that I need to do everything in my power to avoid the sadness and regret expressed within some of these timeless ballads. Music is my therapy and I’ve been schooled by the lessons of songs like “She Believes In Me”. Music is, after all, an empathetic teacher.
"She Believes In Me" is the title of a song written by Steve Gibb and recorded by American country music singer Kenny Rogers on his 1978 album The Gambler. The song was written by Steve Gibb (not the Steve Gibb who is the son of Barry Gibb) and is the tale of a songwriter who has a beloved too good for him. Rogers was reaching the peak of his career at this time, and "She Believes In Me" became one of his biggest crossover hits in the late spring of 1979, reaching number one on the Billboard Country Singles chart. "She Believes in Me" also peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart, and number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. It was also a minor pop hit in Great Britain reaching number 42.
