Of all the remarkable songs performed by Josh Groban, “So She Dances” tops my list. This is one of those songs that make time stand still for me. When my good friend Mark Thomas, better known on YouTube as the “TheLivingroomSinger” (and also“Elvidinck”), sang his own cover for my favorite Josh Groban song of All-Time, I had to find the music and sing it myself. While Mark gave a top notch performance for “So She Dances”, I’m not sure if I was able to do it justice. Of all the songs I’ve covered thus far and posted on YouTube, this is currently the song that I have spent the most time trying to record on my simple miniDV recorder and, seemingly, with little success. Josh Groban is incredibly difficult for me to cover in the first place, and I’ve tried several times. This one takes the cake for making me feel the most uncomfortable … so many little vocal nuances that I want to express and I’ve spent so much time trying to express my feelings with just the right appeal, but I’m still not sure. I never sing a carbon copy for any song I cover. I softened my vibrato for this one, though the opposite might have been better. I tried not to think too much so I could let my instincts interpret the music the way I wanted my expression presented. I tried to present my personality as best as I could, but I’m really not sure about my efforts here. I’ll let all of you be the judge.
This video is my latest effort and I’m posting this version because, even though I’m struggling to find the right expression for this song, that struggle is what seems to be the real expression for how I feel about this particular music. I love this music with great depth and devotion. I want to give my best for it. Yet, I’m not certain that I’d ever have enough to give in the first place; (from my interpretation) very much like the lyrics suggest regarding an unrequited love; all played out within the imagination of one who cannot yet bridge the distance between dreams and reality. Regardless, here it is. I’m not completely satisfied with it. But, like all of my covers that always present some flaws, this is the truth of my efforts and that is what’s most valuable for me. I will never achieve perfection. But, within my imperfection, I strive to present that part of me that is real. I gave what I had and this is what I have to offer. I hope that my cover of “So She Dances” is pleasing to some … “So She Dances”is the sixth track on American singer-songwriter Josh Groban’s platinum-certified, 2006 third studio album, Awake. It was written by Asher Lenz and Adam Crossley.
